Then, split the brush head down the middle (start at the bottom where the cornstarch insert is) and remove the cornstarch insert. The bristles and the insert go in the trash and the main bamboo portion is 100% biodegradable.

WHAT IS THE SMALL PLASTIC PART IN THE TOOTHBRUSH HEAD MADE OF?

The small insert in each bamboo toothbrush is made from cornstarch and Polypropylene, one of the safer plastics. This component is 60% biodegradable and ecologically superior to the plastics used in standard electric toothbrush heads.

WHAT DOES THE WARRANTY COVER?

This means that by the time your organic coffee reaches your cup it would likely no longer qualify as “organic,” and definitely not as Good Stuff.

Toxins in Coffee Growing & Roasting

Here are just three of the pesticides commonly used on coffee beans:

1. Methyl Parathyion is one of the most vile pesticides ever created, and is is toxic to a wide swath of all living things–including humans.
2. Endosulfan is toxic to most animals and takes a very long time to break down in the soil.
3. Chlorpyrifos has been banned for household use in the U.S. as it can cause death and birth defects.

All of the above, and more, can show up in your morning brew if you don’t buy organic coffee.

Organic coffee beans are a great start to a healthier cup of Joe, but it is important that the roasting process be free from harmful chemistry, too.

Roasting equipment needs to be regularly cleaned to avoid harmful solvents showing up in your cup. Finding a a roaster that is dedicated to the nontoxic process can be challenging–it took us a year to find one!

Toxins in Coffee Packaging

Once the beans are roasted, they go into a bag that almost always contain plastics and other toxins that can convey even more toxins to your beans.

Coffee bags are commonly lined with polypropylene to keep the coffee oils from making the bag unsightly. Don’t be fooled by bags that look like simple brown paper. They are almost certainly lined with polypropylene plastic.

Polypropylene (PP), while relatively inert, is the single most abundant micro-plastic found in all the waters of the world (and in seafood…and in every one of us!).

The effects of micro-plastics from PP are only beginning to be understood. Studies have found that polypropylene particles may stimulate the immune system, but human studies are lacking.

Until recently there have been no alternatives to standard coffee bags, but we finally found a new, nontoxic, environmentally safe alternative.

Toxins in Decaf Coffee

There are several decaffeination techniques, one of which is toxic. The important thing is to find coffee that’s been decaffeinated with a water process. Methylene Chloride Process (MCP) is the most common decaffeination technique, and it uses the solvent Methylene Chloride (commonly found in things like paint stripper). According to Consumer Reports, even small doses of MCP can cause “coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. At higher doses, it can cause headache, confusion, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue, and has been found to cause liver and lung cancer in animals.” It’s true that the trace amount remaining in decaf coffee is restricted to no more than 10 ppm, but we definitely prefer our coffee without any of this decided Bad Stuf–our decaf coffee is never processed with Methylene Chloride!

The Madrid 4-in-1 cold brew coffee maker comes with a stainless steel French press plunger and a laser-cut stainless steel infuser. A secondary stainless steel filter is directly integrated into the lid of the Madrid. You can also turn the lid to close while your coffee or tea are steeping to keep your beverage hot longer.

Make homemade cold brew coffee the easy way: Simply add your favourite coarse  ground coffee to the stainless steel infuser of the Madrid 4-in-1 and add cold filtered water. We recommend a four-to-one ratio of water to coffee (4 cups of water to 1 cup of coffee). Then, put on the lid of the Madrid and place your cold brew coffee in the fridge. Make sure to shut the lid to avoid absorbing any aromas from your fridge.  Let it sit for at least 12, up to 24 hours to let the coffee aromas unfold fully. The main cold brew coffee benefits are the reduced acidity and the smoother flavour of the coffee. Cold brew coffee has up to 67% less acidity than hot brewed coffee.  To serve, take out the stainless steel infuser and pour your cold brew coffee over ice.

The water should be just off-boil to avoid burning the coffee grounds. Simply wait one minute after your water has come to a boil and then pour. Place the French press plunger into the beaker and let it sit for 2-3 minutes. Then press down on the plunger and let it sit another minute for the coffee to settle.

There are many ways to use an ice cube tray. For starters, you can pop in a slice of fruit to use as a cool refreshing sucker or to add to tomorrow’s smoothie. You can also freeze your leftover coffee that you let go cold or accidentally over-brewed. Now you have an easy afternoon iced coffee!

This ice cube tray is made of high quality 18-8, 304 food grade stainless steel. We suggest not using other similar looking aluminum ice cube trays available on E-bay or at a garage sale as tiny particles of toxic aluminum could end up in your ice. Please be sure to clean well before and after using – it is dishwasher-safe. There are many little nooks and crannies in the mechanism, so food residue and dust can get caught. For these little spaces we suggest using a Q-tip with vinegar or baking soda in warm water.

Once you experience tallow skincare, you won’t go back to vegan products again. Why does tallow make for superior skincare?

• Tallow is more moisturizing than other oils. Half of human cell membranes are made of saturated fat, and tallow is also 50% saturated fat. The lipids in tallow are the same as those in sebum, so tallow is perfectly suited for our biology.
• Tallow contains a host of vitamins and other good stuff (much of which is missing from veggie oils). These include vitamins A, D, K, and E, plus conjugated linoleic acid and palmitoleic acid (anti-inflammatories and antimicrobials, respectively).
• Tallow soap bars last longer than all-veggie ones, and have a fluffier, creamier lather.
• Those with sensitive skin love tallow soaps, as they are gentle and conditioning. In the words of our soap-maker friend (who makes both vegan and tallow soaps): “Tallow lends a special quality to soap that can’t be obtained with only vegetable oils.”
