1. Green Goo / 2. Babo Botanicals / 3. Earth Mama / 4. California Baby / 5. Poofy Organics
We were pretty lucky in the diaper rash department, but if your baby is afflicted, you’ll want to find an organic diaper cream without chemicals (common culprits are parabens and BHA).
Do Cloth Diapers Prevent Diaper Rash?
My hunch is that cloth diapers are less likely to cause diaper rash than are disposables because cotton is more breathable than plastic, but I haven’t found studies to support this idea.
Note: If you are using cloth diapers, you’ll want to avoid any diaper rash cream that contains zinc, as it can build up in the diaper and render it less effective. I’ve indicated below which rash treatments have zinc.
My Pick for Best Organic Diaper Rash Cream
I’ve compiled a long list of customer emails from thrilled parents who have tried Green Goo’s Baby Balm. It’s hard to find a natural, organic diaper cream that does the trick, but this one does. It also has the safest list of ingredients of any of the Good Stuff brands.

Coconut as Cure-All
I tend to think of coconut oil as a reasonable first-try cure for most ailments, and diaper rash is no exception. Try smearing a little on your baby’s bottom with a Q-tip.
If you want a rash treatment more tailored for tushies, Check out the Good Stuff below.
The Good Stuff: Organic Diaper Cream

California Baby Diaper Rash Cream
California Baby Diaper Rash Cream scores a 2 on EWG’s Skin Deep database because it contains lanolin (the others on this list all score a zero if they have been reviewed by EWG.) All the other ingredients in this organic diaper cream are safe, and it’s a long list of them—everything from tea tree oil to wild pansy extract. I am including it here for those of you who are okay with lanolin, which is effective in serious cases of diaper rash. CONTAINS ZINC (which will ruin cloth diapers).
How to Get This Organic Diaper Cream: Amazon. You’ll pay about $18 for a 2.9-ounce tube.
MADE OF Organic Diaper Rash Cream
Made Of’s Organic Diaper Rash Cream uses non-nano zinc oxide to create a protective moisture barrier, and organic soothers like avocado and argan oils to heal irritated skin.
Miessence
Miessence makes a Baby Bottom Mist that contains many of the same ingredients as the Kimberly Parry cream. It’s also expensive ($18 for an ounce), but I like that it is sprayed on, sparing sore tushies further abrasion.
How to Get: Online, where you’ll pay $18 for a 1-ounce bottle.
Green Goo Baby Balm
Sierra Sage Baby Balm is free of lanolin and all ingredients are organic (including olive oil, calendula, beeswax, and chamomile). This balm doubles as a cradle cap and dry skin treatment, and we have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback, with more than one customer calling it a “miracle” product.
How to Get This Organic Diaper Cream: Gimme the Good Stuff’s online store. You’ll pay $13 for 2 ounces of this cloth-diaper safe cream.

Beautycounter recently added Calming Diaper Rash Cream to their lineup of safe baby products. The primary healer here is non-nano zinc, and the formula also contains natural soothers like jojoba and shea.
Like other Poofy products, their Happy Tush diaper balm contains organic apricot oil and lots of cocoa and shea butters. Fans say that you can use it on eczema, too. (Poofy also makes a Tush Stick that’s safe for cloth diapers).
Badger Zinc Oxide Diaper Cream
Badger makes a great zinc everyday diaper cream for preventing diaper rash before it begins, or treating it once it’s started.

What about Babyganics diaper rashs cream? I know that some babyganics can be sneak stuff.
Maia James says
Eh, it’s not terrible, but it’s got a lot of ingredients, and some of them aren’t so great (sodium benzoate, etc.).
Analu says
Hi Maia, so do you not recommend I buy this cream for my baby? I thought baby”ganics” was like short for baby “organic” products so I guess I assumed this diaper rash cream would be healthy for my baby’s bottom. I really love your articles and always consider your input when buying products. So would you recommend this product or do you absolutely prefer I checkout the other ones on your Good Stuff list instead? Or is this one not bad? Please advise, thank you!
Maia James says
BabyGanics doesn’t use all organic ingredients, which is one reason I think they are sneaky (given the company name!). Overall, they are still better than a mainstream brand, and I don’t think you’re harming your baby by using their diaper cream. But I definitely think there are better options out there.

I bought BAbo botanicals diaper rash cream, it wasnt any helpful for rashes or prevention of rashes. I was resistant to use soducream but had no other option in hand as i had got it for free so i used it n it really works great n soothes the baby buns..my tube of this babo botanicals diaper cream is just sitting idle in the shelf!
I also dont really like the babo botanicals oatmeal lotion for babies. rather Weleda calendula is better. what abt shea moisture?

One question: Why do you think Boudreaux’s Butt Paste ranks so well on EWG?
Maia James says
Hey, thanks for bringing this to my attention! It looks like Boudreaux has a new all-natural version without all the petroleum products; I’ll update my guide accordingly! Thank you!

I recently bought Burt’s bees baby bee multipurpose ointment. I thought it was okay but I might have researched wrong on this one. Just wondering how you would rate this one?
Maia James says
Looks fine to me.
Morgan says
Thanks for all of your input on this! It looks like Burts Bees Baby Multipurpose Ointment isn’t ranked as well on the EWG list because it contains castor oil and frangrance. The jar says the fragrance is “natural” so I’m not sure if that helps? Also do you know what the concerns are with castor oil? I’m seeing it in a lot of things as I’m searching for a new diaper cream. Thank you!
Maia James says
I’m not THAT worried about castor oil, and if the fragrance is natural it’s not a concern.
Natasha says
Hi Maia,

Hi, I am planing to use Thirsties cloth pocket diapers. Are Acure baby products safe to use with cloth diaper? In there diaper balm it says the active ingredient is “Non-nano uncoated zinc oxide 14%”.
Thanks for the help! Staci G
Maia James says
Yes, it should be fine to use with cloth diapers. My understanding is that zinc may cause staining but won’t cause build-up on a cloth diaper.
Maryam Ahsan says
What’s your thoughts about Zum Baby Lavender Balm??
Maia James says
Good Stuff:)

My newborn cant shake off summer heat and a rash.. I tried Aquaphor (ped suggested) and A+D, nothing. How about MotherLove Diaper and Thrush ? I used it with my son and found it worked well.

What about Burts Bee diaper rash cream?
Maia James says
I don’t love Burt’s Bees generally, but their diaper cream is actually fine.
Vicki says
I was wondering the same, since on EWG it actually has horrible ratings (as does the whole Burt’s Bees line of products).
I have absolutely loved this website and have used it for many product choices, but quick question: Are there other sources that you use other than EWG/Skin Deep? I usually like to use at least 3 and more to get a consensus.
Maia James says
Other than this website?:). I don’t know of another comprehensive source. You could check out the Think Dirty app.

Hi,
I’ve been reading that Burt’s Bees has a new diaper ointment formula, but as a soon-to-be first time mom, I’m not sure what is different because I can’t find the old formula to compare it to! I only keep reading that the new formula contains lanolin. Do you have any info or update on this? Thanks so much!
Maia James says
I don’t know about the new vs. old formula but here are my thoughts on lanolin: Lanolin is the greasy discharge from a sheep’s sebaceous glands, and is used in host of cosmetics, from lip balms to breastfeeding creams. Although highly effective in soothing and healing chapped skin, lanolin contains a heavy load of pesticides (the wool is soaked in chemicals to remove parasites before the lanolin is scoured out of it), and at the moment there are no truly organic options out there.
Majda says
You are correct Maia. Most Lanolin ingredients are not highly refined.
As a result, consumers believe they are allergic to Lanolin. This is not true, they are allergic to the impurities left behind. The sheep were fed chemicals or grazed on chemically treated fields and the wool is processed in chemicals in refinement stage to extract oils. Pure Lanolin that is highly refined is very expensive and not used often in Cosmetic products. Baby Butz cream uses pure Lanolin, highly refined, and is safe and effective. Just one of the reasons this cream works well and is used in neonatal units and recommended by Pediatricians.
Ricki S says
We use natural stuff from The Solid Bar Company, their calendula diaper balm especially, to keep vulnerable baby bottom areas rash free. We used it on our 4 year old daughter, many moons ago, and now it works just as fine on our little boy and it has always seems to keep him rash free and soft without any adverse effects, especially as we live in a hot humid area………any thoughts on this from your perspective?
Maia James says
I just looked into this diaper rash cream and it looks like Good Stuff:)
Brie says
I am looking into using just coconut oil on my baby, which coconut oil do you recommend?
Maia James says
You want organic unrefined coconut oil, as the refined variety is deodorized and bleached. And while there is a distinction between virgin and extra virgin olive oil, when it comes to coconut oil, these terms mean the same thing. This one is great because it’s even packaged in glass: http://amzn.to/2bHXIQu
Linda Wilson says
Our grandson also had a terrible rash that through elemination we decided had to be due to allergies in the diaper creams. We found a gal that makes an all natural cream except for the zinc oxide. Her price was only $10 for a large jar with a flat shipping rate. She packaged it in a glass jar so it did not absorb anything for the packaging and sent it right out.
Within a week we were clear of the rash. I understand her son has lots of allergies so she was forced to find ways to keep him healthy so she makes all his needs with healthy, chemical free products.
Here is her email if anyone is intersted to see if she can help your baby, desi becht@yahoo.com

I just came across your website and I’m loving it. It has been so helpful for me being a first time mommy and having no idea about baby products and ingredients. I would love to know your thoughts on the Era Organics Honeybuns diaper balm? Thank you!

Hi Maia,
What do you think about French product Mitosyl ? Thank you so much

Fish liver oil ………….. 20 g
Zinc oxide ……………. 27 g
Vitamin A……….. 12 000 IU For 100 g
The other ingredients are: geranium essential oil, methyl salicylate, butylhydroxyanisole, petrolatum, wool fat, purifies water. This is a protective and healing ointment that contains zinc oxide and liver of fish oil rich in vitamin A
Maia James says
Looks like Good Stuff to me!:)
Majda says
Baby Butz cream is the safest, most effective diaper rash treatment available without a prescription.
Heals most skin rashes in 4-6 hours! Using only natural ingredients. Pediatricians hand out samples to patients and its used in neonatal hospital units.
Betty Jane Mackay says

Analu says
Hi Maia, do you typically list your favorite/safest product first? So if I am looking to change diaper rash creams to a natural and safe one should I just go for Babo? Is that the best/healthiest one??
Maia James says
No, actually they are usually in random or sometimes alphabetical order. For diaper rash cream, my top pick is the Green Goo–this is for both safety and effectiveness. You’ve given me a good idea with this question, though! We should probably be adding some indication of Top Pick next to our favorite products!
Analu says
Yes! That would be amazing and would definitely help us readers to choose more easily! Thanks!
Chloe says
Hello,
Where did you find a reference for about a possible carcinogenic action of geraniol? (Weleda diaper cream)
I couldn’t find any and geraniol oil has been shown to have anti-tumor properties.

How’s Mustela 1,2,3?
Also, opinion on honest diapers and the Owlet Monitor? Thanks!

I don’t like Mustela, I think Honest diapers are fine, and I don’t know the Owlet monitor but will add to my list!
Amelia says
Hello,
Have you had a chance to look at Weleda’s new White Mallow line? The ingredient list is different than the Calendula. Wondering if it’s safer enough to be “good stuff” or not yet. It has the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance.
PS We love your website! Having gone through more than a half dozen different formulas and needing to thicken my little one’s bottles (medical conditions)it has been so helpful to know which soy formula and oatmeal is best. We are very pleased with Nature’s One Soy and Happy Baby Oatmeal.
Maia James says
I haven’t looked into this new line, but thanks for putting it on my radar. Will definitely look into it.

It is curious that I
Nida says
Hello, love your website we just discovered it recently. Please tell how the Mustela 1,2,3 diaper rash cream is? Would love to know if its good stuff that we can use on our baby 🙂 thanks a ton!
Maia James says
Hi there. I’m not a fan of Mustela. There are many other safe brands of diaper rash cream!
Belen Tissera says
Hi, Many thanks for all your feedback. Could you tell me which ingredients you don’t like of Mustela 123. My baby is 7 months old and I have been using it since she was born.
I’m really worried now that I read that from you.
Shalimar says
I really enjoyed this, however, I wanted to share that my experience was that cloth diapers do not help with diaper rash.
My niece was set up with cloth diapers before birth, but she was born with extremely sensitive skin. Unfortunately, when wearing cloth diapers she would get a terrible rash that wouldn’t go away, even with copious applications of cream–we tried every kind we could find in stores. We learned that using disposable diapers helped it clear up and mostly prevented the diaper rash. I think it is because of the way that disposable diapers can pull the urine away from the skin, whereas cloth will absorb but continually touch the skin. We only noticed the pattern because we would occasionally use the diapers they give you in the hospital and the others we had received as gifts.
It was really sad for me to have to admit that cloth wouldn’t work for her, because I was her nanny and I wanted to make the cloth diapers work so badly. We worked on it for three months, but in the end we couldn’t get the terrible rash to go away with cloth so she got switched to disposables.
That was 9 years ago and now I’m having a baby and will not be using disposables. I’m hopeful that things work out better for me, and I’m glad I found this to help me pick out a safe and natural cream for my little one.
Jamie says
What about Kissaluvs Diaper Lotion Potion Spray and concentrate?
Maia James says
Don’t know that one, but will add to list for a future investigation!
Rachel says
Wondering if you know much about Rocky Mountain Soap Co. products (https://www.rockymountainsoap.com). I’ve been loving their Baby Bum Balm for my little one, and am convinced their Belly Butter saved me from stretch marks during my pregnancy. Would love to know your thoughts on their products!
Maia James says
Quick glance suggests it’s Good Stuff–will do a more thorough investigation when we update this guide!
Chloe says
It looks like Broudreaux’s Butt paste has changed their formula. It now says Paraben-, preservative- and phthalate-free under each of the three past options. Is this true?
Maia James says
yes.
Roxanne says
I’m confused. Is the Natural Butt Paste good or still no?
Jackie says
I am wondering the same. The EWG has a very low score for it. I don’t see it updated above. So, I would just like to know why it is not at least in sneaky stuff!
Renee SL says
Silly question, but I”m first time mom here, and first time my son is getting diaper rash at 16 months….teething with 4 teeth starting to pop through, so his diapers have been very loose and even though we change him immediately after he goes, he’s still red and irritated. Question is, can I put any of the “Good Stuff” diaper creams on his penis? I just want to make sure that it’s safe and won’t burn him or anything. Thank you! 🙂
Also, what do you think of this cream?

The two ingredients lists you pasted look fine to me. There are lots of essential oils in both of these, but if your son doesn’t react to them, should be okay.

Have you heard of Little Calendula’s Baby Bee Balm Cream? (ingredients on bottle: cold pressed extra virgin olea Europaea, cera alba, purified aqua, organic calendula officinalis, lavendula officinalis, essential oil, CO2 extract of vanilla planifolia, and sodium borate). Thanks!
Maia James says
I personally feel okay with this list, but some people won’t like the sodium borate (borax).
Stephanie Kerr says
It’s perfectly fine to use a zinc diaper cream on cloth diapers. It might stain but it won’t ruin them. The only ingredient in diaper creams that will cause repelling is petroleum.
Yelena says
Hi Maia,
What do you think of Weleda Calendula diaper rash cream? And also Weleda Skin Food moisturizer? Are those good stuff? What do you think of the Weleda brand in general?
Maia James says
I’m really torn on Weleda. The only ingredients of concern are the essential oils they’ve chosen to impart that distinctive scent (like limonene and geraniol).

What about Medline REMEDY with Olivamine – Calazime Skin Protectant Paste ?
Olivia says
My sister just had my nephew about six months ago and she could never find any method that prevented or even treated his diaper rash. The cloth diapers didn’t make any difference either. It was a constant battle for her. It started as a little joke at first but I suggested that she try Anti-Monkey Butt Baby Powder as a preventative measure. I actually use the adult version for myself when I work out. But I kid you not it actually worked! So well that she started using the diaper rash cream as well in case a little rash did flare up. It contains calamine in the cream so it soothes his delicate skin. It’s definitely worth a look at!

Oh, just saw this and it’s similar to my question, in the comments further down – on my tube of Babo, the ingredients list actually just says “fragrance” – not “natural fragrance” – I wonder if Babo would disclose what the fragrance is?

I loooove your site and refer to it regularly as a trusted resource on par with EWG. And I can’t believe the time it must take you to respond so thoroughly to all of these product questions in the comments. So thank you!
Here’s my question: I’m using Babo Botanicals Oatmilk Calendula Soothing Diaper Cream and it is miraculous. My LO had terrible diaper rash with broken skin and sores and my usual go-to, Earth Mama, along with copious coconut oil, wasn’t helping. The Babo cream is amazing. But I’m wondering why I can’t find an EWG link for that specific product so that I can get a sense of what some of the more complicated ingredients are, and also wondering about the fragrance. Somewhere I read that Babo’s fragrances are all naturally derived, but in the ingredients it’s just listed as “fragrance” and it’s a very strong smell that’s not recognizable to me. Do you know anything about Babo’s ingredients or specifically the fragrance?
Thanks, you rock!

Hi, Many thanks for all your feedback. Could you tell me which ingredients you don’t like of Mustela 123. My baby is 7 months old and I have been using it since she was born.
I’m really worried now that I read that from you.
Do you consider Honest diaper cream safer than Mustela?

It is the only thing that we’ve tried that works on his diaper rash.

This site is everything, thanks! We’ve used various products on your list/from the comments section to treat diaper rash. But now I’m pregnant with a 2nd child, and – IF we choose circumcision – I was wondering if any of these provide a strong enough barrier to protect the site afterwards. I know the hospital recommends piling on the A&D, but is there a safer option that has a petroleum-like feel in order to get that same effect?

Hi! For baby powders, what do you think of the Burt’s bees one? The fragrance it contains is listed as natural, and it contains limonene. Is this okay?

Ever heard of Booty Love by Thirsties? Here are the ingredients: Extra Virgin Olive Oil*, Beeswax*, Oregon Grape Root, Myrrh Gum, Yarrow Herb*, Calendula Flower* What are your thoughts?

Have you been able to check on Baby Hugo Naturals Diaper Rash Cream yet? EWG only references an ‘old product’ and referencing the ingredients list on my container, they’re slightly different.
Thanks!

Imagine this may be an old article as California Baby Diaper rash scores a 1 not a 2 currently on ewg so you may want to update so people don’t dismiss that product.

I came across Zum Products on the website http://www.indigowild.com. I got it as a baby gift and their Zum Baby line is awesome. I think the Salve for Baby’s Bottom has been an instant miracle at healing rashes. It is worth a look at for review. Ingredients appear to be straight forwards—maybe the only question would be all organic.

Not sure if anyone mentioned but my favorite by far is Puremedy Diaper Rash Salve. It is incredible on regular and yeast diaper rash and wonderful ingredients.

I’ve been told countless times to use Bag Balm to help with diaper rash. Would this be any good as far as ingredient safety goes?

Green Goo has lavender. Essential oils are know to be hormone disrupters. I’ve also noticed a lot of changes with formulas per posts here and on amazon. Would love an update on this topic!!! Thanks 🙂

Great info! But what is the issue with lanolin?
Amy says
I’m trying to find research about lanolin – we’ve been using A&D and Butt Paste since baby was born and then I found this guide. I’d like to switch to something more organic but want to show my husband the research as to why lanolin isn’t good stuff..

I read that the Green Goo Baby Balm and Earth Mama Diaper Balm has lavender oil in it. I looked at the ingredients on the ewg.org guide and it says that lavender oil is an endocrine disruptor. From their website: “In preliminary study, linked to prepubertal breast development in three boys, and to estrogenic and anti-androgenic activity in lab assays (Henley et al 2007 Prepubertal gynecomastia linked to lavender and tea tree oils. N Engl J Med. 2007 Feb 1;356(5):479-85.)”
I really liked the diaper balm until I found that out.
