Thanks for your patience, you guys! We’ve finally wrapped up our research process, and I am happy to recommend four furniture companies that manufacture The Good Stuff!
Maybe you didn’t know that most upholstered furniture is teeming with noxious chemicals, but as always, I am here like a ray of sunshine–ready list some diseases that your favorite sofa can cause. What fun!
In all seriousness, there is actually some very good news about the worst chemicals in sofas. I’m talking, of course, about flame retardants, which new legislation has rendered unnecessary. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen the last of these bad boys just yet–but I am hopeful that soon enough you won’t need me to tell you which sofas are safe–because they all will be.
In the meantime, check out the Safe Sofa Guide for our picks for Good, Bad, and Sneaky furniture, plus tips on other ways to reduce your exposure to flame retardants–even if you aren’t ready to buy a new couch.
Stay sane,

Hey, I love this resource!
I was looking for less expensive nontoxic furniture and came across these guys. Do you know if they pass muster? http://www.greensofas.com/501.html
Any insight would be helpful — thanks! 🙂

Everything they say about their sofas looks fine except they don’t mention flame retardants. If you can confirm their sofas are free of any and all fire retardants, then yes, these would be the Good Stuff!

What would be the most affordable option for buying a sofa that uses non-toxic materials?

The biggest concern with sofas is the flame retardant chemicals they contain; you can now get flame-retardant free sofas from many big vendors, such as Ikea, West Elm, and Pottery Barn. Just be sure to confirm that the specific model doesn’t contain flame retardants. Of course, the sofas from these places will still be made of polyurethane foam and the glues and such won’t be Good Stuff. But again, I’m most worried about the flame retardants.
