This is the only water filter Gimme the Good Stuff has been able to find that effectively removes PFA and PFOA contaminants from water. Not sure what this means? Read below.

PFAS:

They are man made, they are very harmful, they don’t break down for decades and they are everywhere. In fact, they are so “everywhere” that 95% of humans in the US have these in our bodies. They are found in the water all over the world. They are even found in breast milk.  

PFAS is the overarching term for a class of over 4700 chemicals that are now called “forever chemicals”. They end up in our water supply and simply do not go away in any meaningful way for a long, long time. And once in our bodies they stay there and bioaccumulate. 

According to one senior CDC official, PFAS in U.S. drinking water presents “one of the most seminal public health challenges for the next decades.”

A recent review from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a host of health effects associated with PFAS exposure, including cancer, liver damage, decreased fertility, and increased risk of asthma and thyroid disease, increased cholesterol, decreased vaccine response in children, changes in liver enzymes, increased high blood pressure, increased eclampsia in pregnant women, increased risk of kidney and testicular and breast cancer… and likely much more.

And then there’s this from The Agency For Toxic Substances and Disease Registry…

There is evidence from human and animal studies that PFAS exposure may reduce antibody responses to vaccines and may reduce infectious disease. Because COVID-19 is a new public health concern, there is still much we don’t know. 

So why is nobody talking much about this? I believe it is because, at this point,  nobody knows quite what to do about it They get into us via the air we breath and the food we eat, but the most important vector is the water we drink. 

These toxins are found in a wide variety of products we buy and use such as:

• Some grease-resistant paper, fast food containers/wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, pizza boxes, and candy wrappers
• Nonstick cookware
• Stain resistant coatings used on carpets, upholstery, and other fabrics
• Water resistant clothing
• Cleaning products
• Personal care products (shampoo, dental floss) and cosmetics (nail polish, eye makeup)
• Paints, varnishes, and sealants
• Fire extinguishing foams

PAFS eventually end up in the water cycle and become distributed into essentially every water source. They can be found in deep wells as well as municipal water systems. They are not filtered out of municipal water systems.

While not a complete solution to the PFAS problem, the ability to filter forever chemicals from our drinking water is an important step. Unfortunately, standard carbon filters are not as effective as we’d wish. Reverse Osmosis (RO) filters do a good job but come with their own set of problems.

A relatively new filtration system, using Bituminous GAC, has now been shown to be as effective as RO without all the downside associated with RO. 

We feel that it is important for us to offer these filters as either an add-on to any of our under-counter or countertop systems, or as a stand-alone filter. 

Each of us here at Gimme the Good Stuff has an under-counter unit so we will be adding the new filter to those immediately.

While an effective water filter is only part of the solution to the PFAS problem, it is a solid start.

• Sodium Bicarbonate: Also known as baking soda, sodium bicarbonate is an odor neutralizer.
• Sodium Carbonate: Also known as washing soda or soda ash, sodium carbonate is a pH adjuster. It raises the pH of the washing water, which results in more effective cleaning. For this reason it’s often referred to as a laundry ‘booster’.
• Vegetable Soap:
  • Sodium Cocoate: This is the chemical name of saponified (that is, ‘made into soap’) coconut oil. It’s the chemical that grabs onto both dirt and water to do the cleaning.
  • Glycerin: This substance is chemically a type of alcohol and is naturally created when the oil is converted into soap. Glycerin is known for skin-softening abilities and is an effective solvent, meaning it can dissolve substances such as stains and dirts.
  • Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil: There is a small amount of coconut oil left in the soap after conversion to sodium cocoate. This is because we use sodium hydroxide, or lye, in the conversion process and leaving excess oil ensures there is no remaining lye in the finished product. Some soapmakers refer to this as ‘superfatting’ and more oil remaining results in a softer, more moisturizing soap. Our coconut soap has only a small amount of excess oil, so it is not the luxurious body type and more of a ‘get the job done’ soap.
  • Water: Water is used in the soapmaking process as a substance that dissolves lye and then is a medium so the lye can reach all of the oil to react. After being useful in this process, the water is allowed to evaporate from the soap over a period of several weeks, and the resulting dried soap has very little water. There is only about 5% water remaining in the finished soap, thus making it more shelf stable than a liquid soap that would require a preservative due to the high (about 60%) water.

Yes. Since these washer sheets do not contain concentration of suds, as you’d normally find with most liquid or powder detergents, it will also work effectively in high efficiency washing machines.

FAQs about Loulouka Formula

Loulouka has changed its Stage 2 formulation. Here are answers to the questions you may have:

1. Why is DHA added to the new version of Loulouka?
   The EU stated a few years ago that from 2020/2021 all formulas need to have DHA (fish oil–for brain development and eye-sight improvement) and a new ratio of minerals/vitamins/protein.)
2. Loulouka now uses skimmed milk instead of whole milk. Why? And what does this mean for the fattiness of the formula?
   Loulouka now heats the fresh fat milk briefly to remove the non-essential fats. Each batch of fresh milk have different fat levels which makes it difficult to maintain the same level for each production. After the milk has been prepared, they add fatty essential bio-oils (rapeseed, sunflower and coconut). With regard to total fat, fatty acid profile, DHA amount, protein content, and the ratio of whey to casein, the recipes are optimally formulated to meet the needs of the respective age group and the legal requirements, respectively. In addition, the new formulations also contain BIO-galactooligosaccharides (GOS) as food fibers.
3. What are the benefits new version vs the old version of Loulouka?
   Mostly, Loulouka has spent the last few years doing research to meet the upcoming 2021 EU regulations. DHA (via fish oil) has been added for brain and eyesight development. The price per gram has also come down slightly.
4. Why is there is DHA but no ARA in the new formula?
   DHA is mandatory and ARA is voluntarily.
5. Why are there prebiotics but no probiotics?
   Prebiotics are organic and important for gut health–and they are found in breast milk. Probiotics, on the other hand, are almost non-detectable in human milk.
6. Why has L-Carnitine been added?
   It is now mandatory per EU laws to formula to contain L-Carnitine.

How to Install Natural Carpet

Step 1: Find an installer

You’ll first want to find a competent installer that has experience with wool carpeting. He or she should have access to a low/no VOC seaming tape and adhesives. You can find an installer here.

Step 2: Measure your space

Measure the length and the width of your room in feet, and then multiply these two numbers to get the total square feet requirement. Add 10% for wastage/overage.

Step 3: Order carpet

You can order carpet above in the number of square feet that you calculated in Step 2. You will receive it within two weeks. You should also order carpet padding, and we recommend the use of this eco-friendly padding. Underpad makes the carpet softer underfoot, reduces noise, and prolongs the life of the carpet.

Step 4: Installation

This natural walll-to-wall carpet can be installed in two ways by the installer you chose in Step 1.

1. Direct glue-down (without carpet padding underneath). If you choose this option, discuss with your installer.
2. With tackless technique (no glue, with underpad). This is our the preferred method. Before a carpet is laid, tackless stripping, called “tackstrips,” is nailed around the perimeter of the floor. These thin strips of wood have short tack points that stick upward to grab onto the carpet’s backing. One edge of the carpet is hooked onto the protruding points of the stripping, and then the carpeting is stretched tight, hooked onto the tackless strips at the opposite wall, and then trimmed. Seams between widths are joined from behind with adhesive seaming tape.

Maintenance & Cleaning

NOTE: All wool carpets shed. Shedding is most common is the first few months of installation. You may notice small fibers in your vacuum cleaner which is typical and is no cause for alarm.

• As with all quality natural carpet made of natural fibers, vacuuming with a suction-only vacuum cleaner is recommended. Beater-bar vacuum cleaners may damage the surface pile of this product. Proper vacuuming on a regular basis will increase performance.
• Use only wool-approved cleaners for removing stains. Do not vigorously rub the affected area. If stain persists, contact a professional cleaner, and be sure they use cleaners designed for natural carpet.
• Shampoo once or twice a year professionally.
• Clip any loose tufts; do not pull.

The best way to dispose of your used Bamboo Electric Toothbrush heads is to use a pair of tweezers to first pull out the bristles, as they are made of Nylon. Then, split the brush head down the middle (start at the bottom where the cornstarch insert is) and remove the cornstarch insert. The bristles and the insert go in the trash and the main bamboo portion is 100% biodegradable.

WHAT IS THE SMALL PLASTIC PART IN THE TOOTHBRUSH HEAD MADE OF?

The small insert in each bamboo toothbrush is made from cornstarch and Polypropylene, one of the safer plastics. This component is 60% biodegradable and ecologically superior to the plastics used in standard electric toothbrush heads.

WHAT DOES THE WARRANTY COVER?

The 1-year warranty on the electric toothbrush covers any and all toothbrush malfunctions that are not the result of user error, breakage or accidental damage. Versatility

Soaring Heart’s mattress toppers work wonderfully on any standard size mattress, instantly making an old bed feel like new again. Place on top of the mattress, but under the mattress pad and sheets, where it will stay securely in place on your bed night after night.

Mattress toppers are easy to care for. Regular flipping, airing, and fluffing will allow your topper to provide years of comfort. We recommend flipping your mattress topper whenever you change your sheets. With proper maintenance, a Soaring Heart topper should last between five and ten years.
